FAQs

1. Which airport do I use?
Your flight needs to land at Jose Maria Cordoba airport, MDE on the abbreviations. This is the main airport for Medellin. Our driver/s will meet you there. When you arrive you must go through immigration. Before your flight you must fill out a CheckMig form. You can download the app, https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co Your carrier may also send you the link.

2. Is Colombia safe for travel?
Colombia is safe. Girardota is a quaint city located approximately 20 miles northeast of Medellin. It is a familial town with a bustling city square. From Girardota one may use a taxi, hired car, or Metro to explore the city of Medellin and surrounding mountains.
Common sense is your best guide, as it is with all travel. We will have people available to answer any questions you may about your trip. Colleen Kassner knows all the quirky spots of interest and we have Medetours to take you to locales such as Guatape, El Penol, El Retiro and the surrounding mountains.
3. Is the water safe?
Tap water is safe to drink. Bottled water is available at the local shops. We also have purified water in the casa.

4. What about the weather?
Medellin is known as the "City of Eternal Spring." Girardota provides the same. The weather is pleasant year-round, similar to June weather in much of the US. Located in tropical mountains, it rains many afternoons for brief periods of time. Bring an umbrella. It's the tropics!

5. What shall I pack?
Comfortable shoes/sandals and clothing are a must, an umbrella, and a light jacket for evenings are a necessity. The Casa has a laundry available so a carry-on should be ample for your eight-night stay. We provide basic toiletries and other items. Colombia uses the same electric voltage as the US, so adaptors aren't necessary.
6. Is English spoken?
English speakers are becoming more common, but Spanish is still the primary language. A translator app and a few key Spanish phrases helps, as does the ability to play charades. We will try to have an Spanish speaker available. Colleen, our artists in residence, is getting proficient in Spanish and will be with you on most tours. Wilson, our tour driver speaks English and is knowledgeable of the sights.
7 What is transportation like?
Ubers are plentiful and private cars are available for hire. The public transportation system is clean, modern, affordable, and takes you to most places of interest. We will be happy to provide directions and help. Our goal is to make your stay safe and enjoyable.
8. Do I need a visa?
Colombia allows a 90-day stay on a tourist permit. Your stay at Casa Encanto falls well within this limit. If you are from outside the US, check with immigration. There is a short immigration form you fill out on-line before your entry and exit. Once here, a photo copy of your passport photo and data is all you need for purchases and ID. We provide secure cabinets for you valuables and recommend keeping you passport locked and using the photocopy when out and about.

9. Do I need to get pesos before I arrive?
ATMs , here called Caja Mechanico, are plentiful both in Girardota and Medellin. The exchange rate varies but the average rate of exchange at this time is approximately 4000 pesos to the US dollar. Most major stores accept credit cards, however, I recommend using cash for purchases at the smaller tiendas and cafes. Tipping is accepted, usually about 10% for meals and services, and more generous tips to our housekeeper ,chef , and driver are appreciated. Colleen can help you with the conversion of your pesos if necessary.

10. Do I need proof of vaccination?
Proof of COVID vaccination is not longer required for entering Colombia. We do advise getting a COVID update and the RSV vaccine if you are able. No one wants to be sick on vacation!
